Fish the South Island of New Zealand

R.M.Tompkins
Professional Guide & Outfitter
New Zealand Professional Fishing Guides Association (NZPFGA) Member Roger Tompkins has been fly fishing in New Zealand and around the world for nearly four decades
That’s almost 40 years of exploring & fishing South Island lakes, rivers and streams.
Now Otago based he’s fought the mighty Mahi Mahi in Tonga, winter night fished the mouth of Tongiro Taupo and beached fresh run Atlantic salmon on the Restigouche River. Caught wide mouthed Bass in the US, bonefish in the Bahamas , Barramundi in the Arafura Sea, Northern Pike in Canada, albacore off NZ’s wild West coast and landed more trout than he can remember, caught in the pristine rivers and lakes of the south island.

Drift Boat Fly Fishing
Hugely popular in the USA and Canada and now here in New Zealand our purpose built US drift boat takes two anglers and a guide. At five metres long and nearly two across its beam this outboard jet powered, pro-boat offers the experienced angler an introduction to the wonders of drift boat fishing or for the angler keen to get into fly fishing a chance, in open water, to cast a fly and a real chance catch a trout.
The drift boat is your access to fishing you could never otherwise get to, a great way to get a true, natural drift of your fly, to access areas that would be impossible on foot, access both sides of the river with ease! Nymphs and indicators is a popular way if the fish are deep, dries and droppers , even stripping a streamers like a large wooly-bugger can be very effective. In the summer drifting large terrestrials such as cicadas, blowflies along the edge of undercut banks often brings out a rising fish...
For the drift boat experience we can offer full day or half-day trips, max two anglers per trip, ex Queenstown or Cromwell. Snacks and refreshments are provided. We are consented for many other south island rivers and lakes so expedition road trips to these waters are priced on request.
Fly Fishing
Enjoy a day or three on the many rivers and lakes of New Zealand or discover joys of drift boat fly fishing on the rivers and lakes of Otago & Southland.
The south island is considered to be one of the best fisheries on the planet and the pinnacle of freshwater brown trout, but don’t dismiss the spectacular rainbow trout, or the chinook salmon, and while seducing a big lazy brown is the stuff of dreams, those crazy impetuous rainbows can strike like a lightning bolt.
Fly fishing is hunting for trout, a stealthy approach to a targeted fish then making the perfect presentation...

We drive you in our specially equipped 4WD, by water on a fully licensed & pro skippered boat or with one of our trusted helicopter operators.
